12 lessons from successful self-publishers

The following provides an insight into the advice given by a number of authors, put together recently by Shane Lee of innatelycurious.com.

“A professional writer is just an amateur that didn’t quit“ (Richard Bach)

With that in mind, read on and take note.

  1. Don’t print. Most of the authors interviewed agreed ebooks are the way to go.
  2. Make a great cover. Your cover represents your work – make it shine.
  3. Use copy editors and proofreaders. We all make mistakes, it’s better to be over cautious here than find a typo later.
  4. Be sure it’s as good as it can be. Is it really the best you can do? Take a break and look again.
  5. More work, more quickly. Get on with the next book, keep your presence known and keep developing.
  6. Get a focus group. Use people from your target audience to test your ideas and trial your work.
  7. Marketing – you and your book. Make friends with your target audience and make sure EVERYONE knows about your book.
  8. Social media. Time consuming and hard work, but a great way to build support.
  9. Write for your readers. What do your audience actually like reading? What do people want?
  10. Diversify your platforms. Amazon is of course the largest ebook seller, but there are others.
  11. Forewords by industry influencers. Support from those who influence your industry can give you credence and help gain you support elsewhere.
  12. Professional. Take charge of your career, have the right attitude and keep going.

And some final words. Never be too proud to ask for help, always ask for honest feedback and listen when it’s given, always look for ways to improve yourself and new ways to reach your audience. Never give up, never stop trying.
