Award is the icing on the cake for surveyor

A chartered surveyor trained and mentored by JK Property Consultants has been named the industry’s top Young Achiever at the national Construction Excellence Awards final in London.

Thomas Conneely won the North East title in May after being nominated by JK Property Consultants and Northumbria University. He went on to beat regional winners from around the UK at the final of the prestigious industry awards, which recognises the cream of the construction and surveying sectors.

Thomas joined Newcastle-based JK Property Consultants after graduating from Northumbria with a first class honours degree in 2011. He was nominated for the award in recognition of his charity and community work, and his successful chairmanship of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) matrics group, which links student, trainee and full members of the institution in the North East.

Qualifying as a chartered surveyor this year after passing his RICS Assessment of Professional Competence (APC), Thomas went on to secure a top job with Knight Frank providing portfolio valuations to the UK’s largest property investment companies.

JK Property Consultants principal Kevan Carrick said: “We are absolutely delighted that Thomas has won the national title. His success is testament to the quality training and mentoring he received and his own hard work.

Thomas was among just 40 per cent of trainee surveyors who pass the APC at the first attempt. The tough qualification involves a minimum of two years’ training and recording of professional experience across a range of different property sectors. His time at JK Property Consultants gave Thomas the opportunity to do this by working with landlords and tenants to offer advice on everything from leases to investments.

Thomas said: “JK Property Consultants provided me with solid foundations to build my career and I’m grateful for the support I received from Kevan and the team.

“Winning the national Young Achiever Award is just the icing on the cake in what has been a major year for my career. I’d like to thank everyone at JK Property Consultants who helped me get where I am today.”

JK Property Consultants works with clients both in the North East and nationally across the public, private sectors and charities to meet their property needs. Company principal Kevan Carrick has advised on a number of major infrastructure and regeneration projects over the last three decades.
