Re-opening of Worksop bingo hall saves jobs

Clickety Click and Two Fat Ladies will be heard once again in Worksop following the re-opening of a bingo hall.

Steve Race has taken the plunge as a business owner following the closure of Top Ten Bingo in Newcastle Avenue on November 3 after receiving guidance and support from Nottingham-based Baldwins accountants.

The bingo hall has opened its doors as The Palais with all ten staff retaining their jobs following a refurbishment.

Steve, who was previously the manager at Top Ten Bingo for three-and-a-half years, said this was an exciting business opportunity which had been made possible by hard work from staff and contractors over the last four weeks.

“Top Ten Bingo sold the premises and everyone was made redundant,” he said. “I approached the landlord about taking over the lease and was given the go ahead.

“We have fully decorated the downstairs bingo area, put in a new lower ceiling, installed new lighting and added new signage inside and outside. We are really pleased with the final outcome.

“We will continue with traditional bingo rather than electronic bingo machines and there will be fruit machines, a licensed bar and hot and cold snacks as well.

“There is seating for around 250 people and bingo continues to be really popular with all ages. I think it is because it is a great chance to meet up with friends and family while having a really good night out and we hope The Palais will become a regular choice for people in the area when they are choosing where to go.”

Steve, who lives in Mansfield, added: “Baldwins accountants has provided advice and guidance every step of the way while I have set up a new business from scratch.

“They have taken a great deal of the worry away to allow me to concentrate on getting the business up and running.”

Steve Harcourt, a partner at Baldwins accountants at Eldon Business Park, Eldon Road, Nottingham, said Steve’s experience and knowledge of the sector would be a great help in the early stages of running a new venture.

“Steve has plenty of understanding in running a bingo hall and as the owner, he can now put his own ideas into practice.

“The re-opening is also good news for the ten people who worked there previously since they have kept their jobs and it is good to know that bingo winners will be shouting ‘house’ once again at the venue.”

The Palais is open between noon and 3.45pm from Monday to Saturday and every night from 6pm to 10pm from Monday to Sunday.
