High flying student returns to TyneMet College
Lottie Whigham, 20, from Whitley Bay, a former Travel and Tourism student, who studied at TyneMet on the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Travel and Tourism, now works at in the Security Department at Newcastle Airport. She returned to College to give students an exciting insight in to her role as an Airport Security Officer.
Lottie was originally employed on a temporary contract at the airport but has now been taken on permanently and three months down the line, after her initial three week training period she has settled comfortably in to her busy role.
Speaking to the students Lottie gave them an insight in to the many day to day tasks she must perform as part of her duties which include; passenger bag searches, car searches and dealing with a multitude of queries and questions from passengers.
Lottie talked to the students about the new body scanners that will be introduced at the airport next year and also gave them advice and tips about applying for jobs.
Lottie said: “I really enjoyed coming back to TyneMet and speaking to the students. I had a brilliant time here at College and the teachers always fully supported me in my ambition to work at the Airport.
“I love my job and I wanted to tell the students all about what I do and also make them aware about progression opportunities within the security department.
“All of the students asked me questions which showed that they were interested in what I had to say, I hope that I managed to help some of them make up their minds about their future careers.”
Michelle Harrison, Travel and Tourism Teacher at TyneMet College, said:
“I was delighted that Lottie, was able to come back and speak to current students. Having inspirational students like Lottie returning to share her experiences, acts as such a motivational tool for the other students.
“I am thrilled that her hard work and determination has paid off, she has the job that she always wanted. I wish her all the best for a successful future!”
