Tenants move into new homes

The first residents have moved into the largest development yet provided by Homes and communities business livin.

The site, on Greenfield Way, Newton Aycliffe has been transformed after a £2m investment, which saw the former disused Greenfields Nursing Home demolished earlier this year.

Now comprising 11 two-bedroom and 11 three-bedroom homes for local families, the development was made available for affordable rent through the Durham Key Options, choice based letting scheme.

Built in partnership with the Government’s Homes and Community Agency and house-building group Galliford Try, the site is part of the £28m investment project by livin to provide 350 additional homes by 2015.

Christina Pearson, who moved in last month said: “This is our first home together since getting married and we really couldn’t wait to move in. The children love it here and the house is really warm and cosy. We’ve hardly had the heating on, it really feels like home.”

Wayne Harris, executive director property and development for livin, said: “The new homes have transformed this area of Newton Aycliffe by replacing the disused nursing home that had become a blight on the local community.

“We had a lot of interest in the properties which are a small step as part of a larger project to provide high quality and affordable homes to families locally.”

The homes, which are built to strict environmental standards, boast a range of energy saving features making them 25 per cent more efficient than homes built using standard building regulations.

Stephen McCoy, managing director with Galliford Try Partnerships North East, added: “Working with affordable housing providers like livin to increase the quality and choice of rented homes available in the region is central to our business. We wish the new residents at Greenfields well in their comfortable new surroundings.”
