TyneMet students coached by UK’s elite fighting force

Uniformed and Public Services students at TyneMet College were delighted to receive a training session from three Royal Marine Commandos when they visited the College.

To whip the students into shape following their Christmas break, the Commandos wasted no time in starting the session with a cardio vascular warm up which they then followed with a series of endurance exercises. Leading on from this the students were introduced to fast-paced team work activities linked to strength and the end of the session concluded with relay activities to help the students warm down.

A presentation giving the students an insight into the Royals Marine’s operational activity and intense training practices was then delivered to the students to inform and enthuse them about the exciting opportunities out there for them.

Warick Stephenson, head of care, sport and leisure at TyneMet College said: “This training session was very tough on the students and many found it hard to complete the whole session, however others did exceptionally well and impressed the Marines delivering the training.

“The Royals Marines are reported to have the most rigorous training programme out of all of the UK military services so it is important that students thinking about a career in the Marines know exactly what will be expected from them.

“The students found the presentation to be very motivational - some said they will definitely be applying to join once they leave college.”
