Newcastle United drop out of top 20 highest earning clubs in world

Newcastle United have fallen outside of the top 20 highest-earning football in the world, according to Deloitte research.

The club dropped to 25th position in the table, below the likes of Napoli, Valencia and VfV Stuttgart.

According to the report, the fall in rankings could be temporary as Premier League clubs like Newcastle are expected to benefit from lucrative television contracts before next year’s positioning.

Elsewhere in the rankings, the success of Manchester City pushed the club to 6th position, putting them above rivals Chelsea in 7th position and Arsenal in 8th.

Liverpool were knocked out of the top ten for the first time since the 1999/2000 season, while Paris Saint-Germain climbed into the top five.

The study looks at club’s ability to generate revenues through matchday tickets; corporate hospitality sales; broadcast rights; sponsors and merchandising.

Dan Jones, partner in Sports Business Group at Deloitte, said: “The combined revenue of the top 20 clubs, almost all of which grew their revenue during 2012/13, increased by 8%, far outpacing the wider global economy.

“This growth comes even before the new record Premier League and Bundesliga broadcast deals, which will impact on clubs’ revenues in next year’s Money League.

“In addition, all clubs in the top 30 generated revenue over €100m. In our first edition of the Money League in 1996/97 only Manchester United topped this figure, and it wasn’t until 2007/08 that all of the top 20 clubs generated in excess of this amount. This rate of revenue growth is a demonstration of the enduring appetite for the world’s most popular sport on the global stage.”
