Southdale’s design a sign competition teaches children the significance of health and safety

Southdale, the construction and development specialist, has combined with local affordable housing provider Wulvern to teach school children the importance of health and safety through a creative competition.

Pupils at Edleston Primary School on Denver Avenue, have been tasked with creating a poster to highlight the risks of an operational building site, after a visit from delegates of Southdale and Wulvern.

Children were given a presentation on the dangers of construction sites, which included a Health and Safety Executive (HSE) DVD, before being briefed on the competition.

Southdale is carrying out a £1.63 million project for Wulvern, and will see the construction of 20 apartments in Alton Street. The project is Southdale’s first land feed project for Wulvern, and is scheduled for completion in October 2014.

The winning poster from each class will receive £15 worth of book vouchers, with second and third place receiving vouchers worth £10 and £5 respectively. All winning posters will be displayed on the site fence.

Nick Holliday, who is the site manager at the Alton Street site, said: “The competition is a fantastic way for pupils to understand the importance of health and safety on construction sites.

“I was more than happy to visit Edleston School and I am looking forward to seeing the competition entries, and the winning ones will look perfect on the site fence.”

Adele Sumner, Wulvern’s Development Officer said: “Many of the youngsters pass the site on their journey to and from school, so this competition is a great way to get them thinking about the dangers of building sites in a way which we hope will help other children understand too.”
