Newcastle city centre leads North East business startup numbers
Over 10,000 business were started in the North East in 2013 and Newcastle lead the region with over 5,000 business alone.
The NE1 city centre postcode area of Newcastle saw over 400 business created across 2013.
Research published by StartUp Britain, the national campaign to encourage entrepreneurialism, shows Newcastle’s Fenham and Elswick areas boasted the highest number (296) of businesses created during the year, outside of the NE1 area.
The Darlington DL3 postcode also featured at the top of the North East tables with 240 business created over the period.
Sunderland languished at the bottom of the table with just 805 business created across all of the city’s postcode areas.

Nationally the research shows 536,446 businesses were registered with Companies House during 2013 - beating the 484,224 business recorded in 2012.
Unsurprisingly, Greater London topped the tables with 136,939 business registered, with nearest rivals in Birmingham at 16,281 and Manchester at 11,765.
