Passion is the best motivator when choosing who to work with…

There are many marketing experts who would advise businesses to find out what makes them unique. Good advice - and something that can take many business owners years to work out.

For my business partner, Gail Powell, and I, we know that it’s our passion and love of doing what we do - whether it will ever make us millions - that attracts our clients. They get that we care about the book they want to write. They understand that we’re helping them transfer the right message from the innards of their minds to that of their readers.

For instance, there are plenty of book coaches out there, and online programmes that offer support and accountability. With so many providers to choose from, to help you get from A to B with your book, why would you choose us?

The first three are elements you’d expect of any service provider. Having been in our customers’ shoes as enthusiastic-but-virginal authors, we know what it’s like to be overwhelmed with the writing and publishing of your book. Having studied for years on the subject, keeping up with changes in the industry and new technologies, we save you many hours’ research to get to where we stand today. Add that on to the many courses and workshops we’ve attended and completed and we also saving you huge reserves of time and money.

But the real distinction is that books are our passion. Books are our reason for existence. Not just between the 9-5, Mon-Fri, but continually. We devour them, dissect them and develop them, day in, day out. In some ways, our experience and knowledge has hindered our pleasure as readers: we can always see things that could be improved upon within every book we read - including our own. We firmly believe that writing is a discipline that forever needs practice and progression.

It’s hard - nigh on impossible - to see your book through the eyes of a reader. And it’s often only when readers don’t flock to buy the end result that many new authors drop the rose-tinted glasses and invite constructive criticism. Let’s face it, criticism is hard to take. We’re not immune, nor are we perfect. But we’ve published and sold our own best-sellers as well as helping others to do the same.

Although Gail and I have had jobs, businesses and roles that broadly relate to what we do, it’s only now that we can get up every day with a smile on our faces - we’re doing what we love. The passion, excitement and care we extol towards books and stories - to make them sought-after, not average or mediocre - is why clients seek out our help.

So, when thinking about your USP, or what makes you ‘tick’ as a business, start with what you love to do. Why you went into it in the first place. If the answer is just for financial reasons, it will be a lot harder for your clients to ‘buy in’ to what you offer; if you don’t feel it, how will they?
