Yorkshire & Humber healthcare construction makes up quarter of entire UK sector growth

Projects in Yorkshire & the Humber are boosting medical and healthcare construction growth in the UK, with a quarter of the total value of construction projects in the region.

According to a report released today, the value of medical and healthcare construction contracts in Yorkshire & the Humber totalled more than £21 million in December.

This counts for 24.9% of the overall contracts awarded for the sector - an increase of 16.1% in the same month last year.

This is largely attributable to key projects such as £9 million reconfiguration works at Pinderfields Hospital, Wakefield, a new rehabilitation centre for jockeys at Malton’s Jack Berry House and a new £3.5 million medical centre at Amberton Terrace in Leeds.

These latest figures, taken from Barbour ABI’s Economic & Construction Market Review, highlight marked growth in the medical and healthcare construction sector UK-wide

The value of projects totalled £155 million in December 2013, a significant 87.5% increase on the same month last year.

Yorkshire & the Humber was also responsible for 13% of all construction contracts, taking into account projects across other sectors such as residential, education and infrastructure, ahead of the South East, South West and North West regions.

On the findings of the report, Michael Dall, lead economist at Barbour ABI, commented: “Although the figures for the medical and healthcare construction sector were down slightly from November, the year-on-year increase indicates a comparatively stronger finish to 2013 than the previous year.

“Public hospitals,such as the work on Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield, are still the dominant type of contract within the sector, but this is down by 39% on last year.

“Surgeries, health and medical centres, which accounted for 21% of the value of contracts in the sector, were up 5 per cent compared to November, and projects such as Jack Berry House in Malton and Amberton Terrace in Leeds are key to this resurgence.”
