NW businesses have chance to forge links with Malaysian industry leaders

North West companies are being invited to boost their links with Malaysia at a UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) conference aimed at furthering connections with this growing and influential market.

The event Business Opportunities in Malaysia takes place on Wednesday 26 February at Old Trafford Stadium, Manchester, and offers companies the chance to meet business leaders and senior representatives from Malaysia.

The conference is open to businesses from all sectors, and aims to encourage co-operation between the two countries, through closer working relationships between the UK and Malaysian industry.

UKTI North West is also organizing a multi-sector trade mission to Malaysia in June 2014 to coincide with SME Corp Malaysia’s SMIDEC Trade Show 2014 in Kuala Lumpur.

Speakers at the Old Trafford conference include Clive Drinkwater, UKTI Regional Director, Phil Humphreys, Procurement Director of BAE Systems, Mr Saifol Bahri Shamlan, Deputy CEO of SME Corp, Ms Najihah Abas, Director of MIDA London, Professor Abigail Gregory of University of Salford, senior representatives from Manufacturing Group Warwick University and University of Nottingham, who will brief delegates about the trade environment in Malaysia and address the areas outlined in the Malaysian Economic Transformation Programme (ETP).

Launched on 25 September, 2010, the Economic Transformation Programme (ETP) was formulated as part of Malaysia’s National Transformation Programme. Its goal is to elevate the country to developed-nation status by 2020.

Philomena Chen, Head of Asia Pacific Development at UKTI North West said: “Malaysia is a capable, growing market and an influential country in the ASEAN region and beyond. In support of the governmental UK and Malaysia bilateral agreement signed in 2011, UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) and BAE Systems are looking to promote opportunities for two-way trade and investment in Malaysia.

“The conference will encourage business links with Malaysian Industry, and aims to inform, identify and facilitate opportunities in support of closer relationships. There will also be an opportunity for one to one business-to-business meetings so companies with an interest in the market are encouraged to sign up.”
