New £429m Liverpool Royal Hospital project underway
Building work has started on the new £429m Royal Liverpool University Hospital.
A site adjacent to the current hospital is being cleared and hoardings have been erected.
The new £429m project hospital is being funded partly by the government and partly through private finance initiative.
The Royal’s chief executive Aidan Kehoe said the new facility would provide the “most advanced” treatment for patients.
Helen Jackson, director of strategy and redevelopment at the hospital, took the lead on the hospital programme seven-and-half-years ago.
She said the new hospital - which will offer single rooms throughout - will play a vital role in improving health across the city region.
She sees it becoming a catalyst for closer working among health partners eager to turn the tide on Liverpool’s poor health. The city currently has the country’s worst death rates for cancer and high levels of heart disease.
The new hospital is scheduled to open in 2017.
Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust said it would include 18 theatres, 23 wards and 646 single bedrooms.
The current hospital will be demolished once the new development is completed.
