Leeds United ownership agony continues as Football League hold up Cellino’s bid

After the disastrous week at Leeds United, further trouble comes as the Football League have not yet ratified Massimo Cellino’s takeover bid.

It is necessary for them to agree to the takeover before the Italian can actually take power over the club.

Cellino will have to supply the League with more information before they will rubber-stamp the takeover, despite having sold Cagliari, which he has been involved with since 1992.

Cellino is also a convicted fraudster, having been arrested in February 2013 for attempted embezzlement following an investigation into the construstion of the Stadio Is Arenas and the matter remains unresolved.

He has previous convictions from 1996 and 2001 concerning false accounting and embezzling the Italian Ministry of Agriculture of £7.5 million.

In a statement made by the Football League, said: “At its meeting on Thursday, the Board of Directors of The Football League were appraised of the current situation regarding the ownership of Leeds United.

“The Board were informed that The League is yet to receive all of the information it has requested from the relevant parties.

“The matter cannot be progressed further until the required information is forthcoming.”
