£10m Middlesbrough rehab centre shortlisted for national design award

A newly opened neuro, stroke and spinal injury rehabilitation centre in Middlesbrough has been shortlisted for a national design award.

The Gateway, a state of the art, multimillion pound facility in Middlehaven, has been shortlisted as one of three finalists for Best Design for Young Adults in the prestigious Pinder’s Healthcare Design Awards.

A judging panel will award The Gateway, part of Keiro Group, with a trophy for reaching the finals next month together with a cheque for £500, which the centre can donate to a charity of its choice.

Keiro’s business relationships director, Alistair McDonald said: “We are delighted to have been shortlisted for a design award so early on. Although we opened this month, there have been years of thought and planning for the design of the building to ensure that it is bright, welcoming, luxurious and attractive on the outside as well on the inside.

“Everything in The Gateway was designed specifically with the client and their families in mind, from private roof terraces to comfortable hydro pool viewing areas, apartments, houses, gyms and a social bistro style café, as well as spacious bedrooms and social areas and permanent office and meeting space for charities and NHS partners.”

Keiro worked closely with P+HS Architects to create the landmark within the Middlehaven development area in Middlesbrough.

P+HS Architects’ managing director, Joe Biggs, commented: “It has been a pleasure to work with Keiro on this innovative scheme and we hope that we have captured their passion and vision within the completed building. Neuro rehabilitation services cover wide ranging and complex needs so the challenge for us was to deliver a building from which these specialised services could be delivered whilst creating an inspirational and non-clinical environment where clients, families, staff and the community would feel welcome, safe and relaxed.

“Keiro has been an inspirational client that we have worked with for several years to develop this landmark scheme, and we look forward to building upon this valuable relationship over the forthcoming years when hopefully there will be opportunities to develop further exemplary projects.”

Dubbed ‘the future of neuro-rehab’, the £10 million facility is the first of Keiro’s new designs to be introduced as part of a unified rehabilitation model with an array of service partners set to roll out across the UK over the next five years.

Pinder’s director Jon Chapman said: “The Gateway has been successful in making the shortlist due to its external eye-catching design and creative use of space to make life better for its clients and families. This year the standard of entries was excellent, which made the task of selecting the finalists a difficult one for our judges.”

The winners of each award will be announced at the Design Awards lunch held in London on April 2, 2014.

Pinders is a national professional and consultancy services specialist, recognised by the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors, and has been operating since 1969. Pinders has organised the Healthcare Design Awards since 1999, which aims to promote and recognise the very best developments in all types of care related properties.
