A Level students showcase their designs at the Jam Jar Cinema

A Level Graphic Design students studying at Queen Alexandra Sixth Form College, North Shields, were invited to showcase film posters that they had designed at an exhibition hosted by the Jam Jar Cinema in Whitley Bay.

The 14 students were given a brief to design film posters based on the minimalistic graphic design concepts of Saul Bass - who was not only one of the great graphic designers of the mid-20th century but the undisputed master of film title design.

The students eagerly took up the challenge and their teachers were delighted with the high standard of design work that was produced.

The exhibition was on display to the general public at the Jam Jar Cinema from 29th January until the 7th February 2014 and a ‘Private View’ was also arranged exclusively for friends and family of the students – the Private View was a huge success with many guests stating that that they were amazed by the professional poster displays that the students had created.

Following the Private View the students were then invited into the Cinema to watch a screening of Sunshine on Leith, a 2013 British musical film.

Dr Paul Harvey, Programme Leader for the HND Graphic Design course, at the Creative Studios, based on the Queen Alexandra Campus, said:

“The exhibition was a huge success - the students demonstrated that they could follow a brief and produce designs of the highest standards.

“I was extremely impressed with their design concepts and levels of creativity. The work they produced to exhibit was very professional, their friends and families were wowed at the Private View and feedback from the general public has been very positive too.

“If the students continue to produce design work such as this, they will almost certainly be on target to receiving very high A Level grades.”
