Manchester City’s stadium expansion plans given go-ahead

An application to allow the capacity of Manchester City’s football ground to increase from 48,000 to about 62,000 has been approved.

The club is seeking to add a third tier to the North and South stands at the Etihad stadium.

These will each include about 6,250 seats, with a further 2,000 pitch-side seats also to be added.

The expansion will see the Etihad Stadium become the second largest venue by capacity in the Premier League, behind the Old Trafford ground of neighbours Manchester United.

The go-ahead for the expansion, aiming to be completed by the 2015-16 season, was granted at a meeting of the Manchester City Council planning committee.

The football club moved to the stadium in 2003. Initially, it had a capacity of 38,000 when built for the 2002 Commonwealth Games, under its previous name, The City of Manchester Stadium.
