Lease extension brings bright future for King Edward’s pool

hlw Keeble Hawson has played a key role in ensuring that Sheffield’s King Edward’s Swimming Pool continues to make a splash with the local community for the next 30 years.

The firm, one of the biggest in the region with offices in Sheffield, Leeds and Doncaster, has provided support to help secure the future of the landmark facility by extending its lease with Sheffield City Council until 2044.

Built in 1933 as part of the school, the baths in Clarkehouse Road are run by the King Edward VII School Swimming Pool Trust.

Set up in 1993 to prevent the loss of a popular community facility when the Council made the decision to close it, the Trust, with considerable help from the Council, has invested £400,000 on extensive improvements which include an energy efficient heating and air handling plant and a new roof.

Paul Gibbon, hlw Keeble Hawson commercial property specialist and partner at the Sheffield office said: “It’s tremendous to know that future generations can enjoy the pool’s wide-ranging activities including aqua aerobics classes and school swimming lessons. The extended lease is likewise crucial to secure grant funding in the future.”

Sheffield-based commercial surveyor and trustee Guy Rusling commented: “Having previously worked with hlw Keeble Hawson, I knew that we would receive a great personal service from experienced lawyers whose expertise has been invaluable in cementing our relationship with Sheffield City Council for the next three decades.”

The Trust’s £400,000 investment has significantly reduced running costs and sustainability and a refurbishment programme is on-going.
