Annual placement fair for counselling students at TyneMet

A recent Counselling Placement Fair at TyneMet College proved a huge success both for organisations who were looking for volunteers and for counselling students who are required to gain counselling experience to complete their course.

The event, organised by Carmel Slawski and Rob McGinley, joint Course Leaders for the Foundation Degree in Counselling, takes place twice every year and introduces organisations who need volunteers to students who are required to gain hands-on counselling experience as part of their counselling course criteria. This year Derwentside Mind, Cruse Bereavement and Norcare came in to the College to meet the budding counsellors.

The event was open to all students studying on all levels of Counselling courses delivered at TyneMet, however it was of most importance to students studying on the Foundation Degree in Counselling as they require 100 hours of counselling experience to successfully complete their course.

TyneMet College delivers various counselling courses including; Level 2 Helping Skills, Level 3 Counselling Studies and the Foundation Degree in Counselling, as well as Level 6 Counselling Supervision training- last year three Foundation Degree classes boasted 100% achievement rates with 96% of the students saying that they enjoyed their course.

Rob McGinley, said: “We hold this event twice a year because it provides the perfect opportunity for students to speak directly to organisations with the aim of securing a voluntary placement which will give them the ‘live’ clinical therapy sessions they need to put the theory part of their course in to practice.

“At TyneMet we deliver counselling courses on a flexible basis, the classes take place in unique tailored counselling booths with state of the art video equipment and we are delighted with our high achievement and student satisfaction rates.”

Rob who has recently additionally qualified as a clinical hypnotherapist also said:

“At TyneMet we are constantly updating our resources and teaching practices to reflect changes in the national curriculum and in industry.

“I studied for six months with Nigel Hetherington, Master Hypnotherapist and Neuro Linguistic Programming trainer, to complete a course which has given me insightful understandings of the way language can positively change thought, action and learning.

“I am currently exploring ways to embed this in my counselling teaching, it’s very exciting and our students are keen to engage in progressive teaching techniques.”
