North East engineer achieves elite status

North East civil engineer, Timothy Brownbridge from Bellingham, Northumberland has been awarded Fellowship of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE).

Respected internationally, ICE Fellowship is the highest grade of ICE membership and a benchmark for those practising at the top level within the civil engineering profession. Only those with a position of responsibility in the planning, design, construction, maintenance or management of important engineering work, or with a key role in the education and training of the next generation of engineers can be awarded this level of membership.

Timothy was presented with his Fellowship certificate by ICE President, Geoff French, at an admission ceremony held at the ICE headquarters in Westminster, London.

Penny Marshall, ICE North East interim regional director, commented: “Gaining ICE Fellowship is an exceptional achievement and I warmly congratulate Timothy on joining an elite group of civil engineers. This highly-respected accolade recognises a significant contribution to the civil engineering profession and seniority in the industry.”

Timothy is the vocational training centre manager for national civil engineering contractor BAM Nuttalll Ltd.

Explaining why he became a civil engineer, Timothy said: “I was inspired by being part of a team that developed and formed the fabric of society. I would advise young people to consider a career in civil engineering as it is very rewarding and fulfilling, it can be challenging at times but always brings out the best from those involved.”

During his career he has been involved in a number of significant civil engineering projects including Kielder Dam, the Tees Barrage and Yarm Flood Alleviation Scheme, changing the landscape and river uses permanently for the benefit of all. He is now proud to use his experience to develop civil engineering training and qualifications to enable others to progress.

He added: “Becoming a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers is my greatest achievement in my career to date. Fellowship represents peer recognition of professionalism, integrity and achievement while making a significant contribution to both the civil engineering profession and the construction industry. I am overwhelmed by the encouragement and support I have received to achieve this and must take this opportunity to thank all those involved”
