North East company secures high profile contracts with English Heritage

Stone Technical Services Group (STS), in Darlington, has been appointed to work on a series of English Heritage properties around the North East and in London.

STS has vast experience of working with English Heritage and has now been appointed to carry out works to Barnard Castle in County Durham, Brinkburn Priory in Morpeth, Bessie Surtees House on the Quayside in Newcastle and Berwick Barracks and Belsay Hall in Northumberland.

The works at all of the sites involve the installation of various safety equipment and fall arrest systems to allow repairs to be carried out at high levels and in dangerous locations, such as on cliff faces.

In London, STS is working at St Paul’s Cathedral installing safety features to the dome and tri-forum levels. Stone has a working relationship with St Paul’s spanning over a decade as the sole approved lightning protection contractor.

MD, Dave Stone, said: “STS are experts in the fields of ecclesiastical and heritage skills, installing systems sympathetically and in line with English Heritage’s- and other historic societies’- strict guidelines. Our team has vast experience of working on all terrains and in all weathers- two very important factors due to the locations of many of these stunning structures.”

At the start of 2014, Stone Technical Services Group re-branded to allow its four divisions to grow independently- STS Lightning Protection, STS Restoration, STS Maintenance and Facilities Management and STS Conservation- and to help with expansion plans and the ongoing diversification of the business, making best use of its teams’ areas of expertise.

Managers at Stone reported a successful 2013 with turnover steadily growing to over £2 million. Five new jobs were created, taking staff numbers to 35. The company hopes to create around six new jobs in 2014 and boost turnover by around 30%.

As well as English Heritage, STS works with local authorities, Network Rail, the NHS, Selfridges, The Royal Courts of Justice and St Paul’s Cathedral carrying out a variety of projects ranging from facilities management, masonry restoration and general repairs to specialist high level repairs and lightning protection and installation.
