Million pound funding will help create shops in Whitley Bay Dome

Just over £1 million has been secured by North Tyneside Council to help create three new shops or cafés in the ground floor of the Whitley Bay Dome.

The Council secured cash through the UK’s Coastal Community Fund, which will also be put towards a new car park for visitors to the Dome, beach and promenade areas.

Once construction work is completed in early Spring 2015, the new commercial units are expected to create 12 jobs.

The money is in addition to £1.9 million from the government and £3.59 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), earmarked for the overall restoration of the Dome.

Elected Mayor for North Tyneside, Norma Redfearn, said: “This funding is fantastic news. It will be really exciting to see shops at the Spanish City Dome once again and the extra visitor parking will be a real boost for the seafront area.

“Our work in Whitley Bay is gaining pace and this latest development will provide even more momentum. All of this will have an extremely positive impact on Whitley Bay and North Tyneside as a whole, attracting new visitors and future investment. It should give residents and local businesses confidence that things are really moving forward.”
