New £9.9 million Sheffield technical college reaches out to employers

The £9.9 million University Technical College (UTC) Sheffield, on Matilda Street, has urged employers to supporting students through work-based projects and the development of technical skills.

Nick Crew, Principal, UTC Sheffield, said “UTC Sheffield delivers a well rounded education offering traditional academic and technical qualifications, and employers’ support is crucial to enhancing our students’ skills development and prospects.”

The first institution of its kind in Yorkshire and the Humber, UTC Sheffield’s catchment area is Sheffield City Region including South Yorkshire and North East Derbyshire.

More than 40 employers are already backing UTC Sheffield in a range of ways. This includes providing guaranteed recruitment interviews, sponsorship and work placements, and setting industry based projects.

Key supporters include Siemens, Newburgh Engineering, Rolls-Royce, Sheffield Forgemasters, Tata Steel, the University of Sheffield’s Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre with Boeing, Performance Engineered Solutions, Team Cooper Games, Warp Films, Sumo, Resolve IT and Visionmix.

UTC Sheffield is fitted with £1 million of specialist equipment including top specification engineering systems and robotics, high tech design and sound studios, and an all weather roof-top sports pitch.

It has been led by The Sheffield College with Sheffield Hallam University and the Sheffield Chamber of Commerce and Industry as co-sponsors. Sheffield City Council initiated the application, and is providing the land on a 125-year lease at a peppercorn rent.
