Global cities must co-operate on trade, says BRICs economist O’Neill

The city of Manchester is driving forward the discussion about the importance of cooperation between global trading cities in its first stand presentation at MIPIM 2014, the international property convention taking place in Cannes, France.

The speech was delivered by Jim O’Neill, former chair of Goldman Sachs Asset Management, as known in the practice of economics for coining ‘BRICs’ (to refer collectively to the economic growth markets of Brazil, Russia, India and China).

Mr O’Neill updated the audience on developments of the City Growth Commission, a 12-month project that he currently chairs.

The Commission is seeking to influence all political parties in the run up to the next UK General Election, in making the case for regional cities to take a new role in our political economy.

Sir Howard Bernstein, Chief Executive of Manchester City Council, and Eamonn Boylan, Stockport Council are also addressing the convention, discussing the topic of Accelerating Recovery – Plugging the Investment Gap
