Major investment for Teesside pub creates jobs

A £160k investment in a Teesside pub has created four jobs and even a new beer.

The Wellington at Wolviston, near Stockton-on-Tees has been serving the village since 1821 and reopened last week following refurbishment.

Landlord Andy Wain has marked the occation with a new house ale in partnership with Consett Ale Works, who have been brewing from the town’s Grey Horse pub since 1998.

Andy said: “As a cask marque pub, we have always catered for real ale drinkers and across the industry we can see that interest in real ale and craft beers isgrowing.

“We have various ales on offer and those from Consett Ale Works always prove popular and customers often ask for them. To mark our refit in style we wanted to create a house ale so decided to approach Consett Ale Works to see if they could brew something based around their popular Men of Steel bitter for us.

“They were excited by the idea and Iron Duke, named after Wellington himself, was born.”

Jeff Hind, owner of Consett Ale Works, added: “We were delighted when Andy approached us with the idea of creating a special ale that would be available for his customers at the Wellington.

“Iron Duke fits nicely with our range inspired by the ironworks which Consett was famed for, and our ales celebrate that industrial heritage.”

The Wellington can be found on Wolviston High Street and is a cask marque accredited pub and features three separatebars and a beer garden. It is owned by the award-winning Stonegate Pub Company.
