Work gets underway on new luxury hotel in Newcastle
Work has begun on a luxury new hotel in the heart of Newcastle’s Central Station redevelopment.
The Hampton by Hilton Hotel will be situated opposite Central Station in the city centre, and is due for completion in May next year.
The project will transform the existing eight storey Baron House on Neville Street into a 160 bedroom hotel.
The development will involve a phased approach with the initial phase concentrating on creating the building envelope.
The next phase will provide 124 bedrooms, the hotel front and back of house accommodation, hospitality front of house zones, public toilets, bedrooms and breakfast kitchen at second floor, bedrooms and hotel back of house accommodation at fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh floors.
The final phase will be to provide an additional 36 bedrooms and back of house hotel accommodation to the third floor which is currently occupied in part by tenants.
Alan Greenwell, managing Director of Metnor Construction, who are conducting the works, said: “This is a hugely exciting project for the team at Metnor Construction. The Central Station area of the city is currently undergoing a major redevelopment, and we’re pleased to be involved by leading the construction of this landmark, luxury hotel.
“We are employing a team of more than 100 tradesmen and designers to support us on this project, helping to create a number of new jobs locally. Our teams will be working closely with the developer and operator to ensure this project is completed on time, on budget and to an exceptional standard.”
Metnor’s expertise in construction of hotels within the North East, includes the Sleeperz Hotel development on Westgate Road, for which they won the prestigious RIBA Design award, Hotel du Vin on Byker Road, Matfen and Slaley Hall.
Steven McGee, Project Director for the Client, said: “Metnor Construction has an excellent reputation and a wealth of experience in hotel development, accumulated through its work on numerous high profile projects throughout the years.
“This experience is a key factor in our decision to appoint them to manage the construction of the Hampton by Hilton, in Newcastle.
“During the two stage tender process, Metnor demonstrated an awareness and detailed understanding of the Client’s aims and are committed to exceed these expectations.
“Their knowledge of the locality and local supplier base is a key ingredient in ensuring this project is a successful economic contributor to Newcastle City Centre and the North East.”
Hampton by Hilton Hotel adds to the list of successful building contracts undertaken by Metnor Construction who have worked on some of the most high profile buildings within Newcastle over the last few years.
The company was responsible for building the Newcastle Falcons stadium at Kingston Park back in 2002, and in recent years the Generator Studios building on Trafalgar Street, Carliol Square office block which overlooks the Central Motorway as well as carrying out extensive refurbishment work at Slaley Hall.
