£83k Sport England investment for Leeds leisure centres

Four Leeds leisure centres are getting a major facelift worth more than £83,000.

The refurbishment project will see work carried out to revamp the facilities at Kirkstall, Scott Hall, Aireborough and Fearnville leisure centres.

The scheme is being funded through a partnership between Leeds City Council and England Squash and Racketball, who have provided a grant of £55,000 of Sport England cash towards the work.

Councillor Lucinda Yeadon, Leeds City Council’s executive member for leisure and skills, said: ““This refurbishment project will give a real boost to the thousands of keen squash and racketball players we have in Leeds. But we also hope giving our courts a fresh look will encourage even more people to take up the sport.

“The most important thing is that by investing in our squash courts, we’re making sure that people have the opportunity to have fun while enjoying a healthy, active lifestyle.”

Work at the four leisure centres will include installing new glass doors, frames and walls as well repainting and resurfacing.

Susan Meadows chief executive officer at England Squash and Racketball said: “England Squash and Racketball (ESR) have identified Leeds as a priority area and have been delighted to invest in the refurbishment of 14 squash courts across the city using Sport England funding.

“This has been done as part of a wider capital investment strategy which focuses on increasing participation in both squash and racketball.

“In addition to upgrading of facilities ESR will also be working with the council and local communities to create more opportunities to play.” Squash courts are currently available at Aireborough, Fearnville, Garforth, Kirkstall, Middleton and Scott Hall leisure centres.
