Osborne's boost for Mersey Gateway project
The Chancellor of Exchequer has announced a £270m guarantee for the Mersey Gateway Bridge project, linking Widnes and Runcorn in Cheshire, during his Budget speech.
The Mersey Gateway project would see the construction of new road bridge across the River Mersey and the Manchester Ship Canal.
The bridge will be located approximately 1.5 km to the east of the existing Silver Jubilee Bridge. It will connect the Central Expressway in Runcorn with the Eastern Bypass and Speke Road in Widnes. It is expected that tolls will be charged.
The project’s centrepiece is a new six-lane toll bridge over the River Mersey. The existing Silver Jubilee Bridge will also be tolled.
The new crossing is expected to help create thousands of new jobs, secure inward investment to the area and deliver important regeneration benefits.
