TyneMet Uniformed and Public Services Students Learn the Law in Court
Uniformed and Public Services students studying at TyneMet College were recently invited to visit Newcastle Crown and Magistrate Courts to view live judicial proceedings.
The group of 42, made up of Level 3 BTEC in Public Services and Level 3 Diploma in Uniformed Services students, were given access to attend a variety of court room sessions when they visited Newcastle Crown Court and Newcastle Magistrates Court.
In the morning, at the Crown Court, the students were given a tour and attended a criminal trial and later in the day, at the Magistrates Court, they witnessed sentencing procedures where they were able to listen to the defence and prosecution Barristers sum up a case.
The students said that they thought this visit was extremely beneficial to them; the experience of visiting the Courts was a first for most of the students and the tours helped them better understand the layout of the buildings. They also said that attending the live sessions was really exciting and they learned a lot about how a court session is structured.
Warick Stephenson, Head of Care, Sport and Leisure, TyneMet College, said:
“Educational visits like this give the students an insight into a real environment in which some students may eventually work in.
“Many of the students this year are focused on applying to join the Police Force so this visit to the Courts was invaluable to them.
“Visits scheduled to take place later in the year include, HMP Northumberland and Wallsend Police Station. “
