Nottingham based solicitor warns same sex couples against substandard legal protection
As March 29 2014 approaches, and the first same sex couples are married in England and Wales, a Nottingham based solicitor is warning same sex couples that their current legal protection may be inadequate.
Rosamund Evans, of Barker Evans Private Client Law, who is a specialist in inheritance and asset protection issues, has been invited to talk to healthcare professionals at The Nottinghamshire Healthcare Trust LGBT Forum on March 28, in a bid to raise awareness of the impact of the new legislation on their current and future relationship status. Rosamund Evans wants to safeguard same sex couples against the disappointment of substandard legal protection.
The event will see matters such as the importance of having adequate plans in place for the newly married couples and the potential risks they may face which they may not be aware of.
Rosamund said: “A lot of couples do not recognise the impact the new Act will have on existing civil partnerships and what the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act 2013, could mean for many LGBT couples in the future, should either partner die or become mentally incapacitated.
For instance, any wills people have in place will be automatically revoked once they are married. We are expecting a lot of older same sex couples choosing to marry, who need to make sure that they have asset protection and long term care plans in place appropriate for their new situation“
Barker Evans Private Client Law provide an array of services for couples, from inheritance rights, to aspects of a relationship break down, such as asset protection and property issues.
Rosamund added: “The subjects I am approaching at the event are valuable pieces of information for the LGBT community, and I am excited at the prospect of speaking to other organisations so that they can be better informed and understand how by using the services we provide, can help.”
