Bucharest becomes newest city on Doncaster Sheffield airport destination list
The Romanian capital Bucharest has become the latest city to be added to the list of destinations from Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield.
Wizz Air has today unveiled the new route from the Yorkshire airport with flights every Monday and Friday, starting from June 13. It will offer the only direct service outside of London.
Bucharest is Romania’s largest city, located in the southeast of the country, with more than 1.8 million residents. Known for its wide, tree-lined boulevards and eclectic architecture, combining vast communist buildings with art nouveau palaces and quaint old streets, Bucharest has become a popular weekend destination for travellers.
The Palace of the Romanian Parliament has a floor area of 360,000 square metres and holds the world record for the largest administrative building (for civilian use), as well as being the world’s heaviest building.
Doncaster Sheffield Airport and Wizz Air recently announced new flights to the Latvian capital Riga as the airline continues to expand its operations from Yorkshire.
More than 1.4 million people have flown from Doncaster Sheffield Airport with Wizz Air to accommodate the growing interest in Central and Eastern European destinations and also to support the Central and Eastern European population living and working in Yorkshire.
Steve Gill, managing director of Doncaster Sheffield Airport, said: “This new route to Bucharest is fantastic news for the region’s passengers.
“It will connect Yorkshire to a major European city which offers a great location for both leisure and business travellers. It also supports the local Romanian population who will welcome the new link.
“Wizz Air has shown great commitment to Doncaster Sheffield Airport, increasing the number of flights to destinations, improving travel times and adding new routes.
“With this new route we expect to have around 300,000 Wizz passengers a year flying from the airport. We look forward to developing this partnership further with the airline to provide a range of locations for people to visit.”
Daniel de Carvalho, spokesman for Wizz Air, added: “This new route to Bucharest, together with the route to Riga announced recently, underlines Wizz Air’s commitment to Doncaster Sheffield Airport and the Yorkshire region.
“Since starting at Doncaster Sheffield Airport in 2006 with just three weekly services to Katowice in Poland, Wizz Air now operates 22 flights per week to eight destinations - Riga in Latvia, Vilnius in Lithuania and Gdansk, Warsaw, Katowice, Poznan and Wroclaw in Poland and now Bucharest in Romania.
“We hope that the two new routes will also be an attractive option for people in Yorkshire to access these historic cities and learn more about the region.”
Doncaster Sheffield Airport provides flights to more than 30 destinations around the world.
