First Copenhagen flight sets off from Leeds Bradford International Airport

Scandinavian Airline’s new direct flight to Copenhagen yesterday as Leeds Bradford Airport celebrated the start of the new twice weekly service.

The new flights are expected to attract the leisure traveler and also those passengers wishing to stay the working week in Scandinavia, with the Monday and Friday direct services between Leeds Bradford and Copenhagen.

Bdaily spoke to Christian Wild, who said that they had done extensive research into businesses in Yorkshire as well as the Chambers and UKTI. Many had thought of expanding into Scandanavian countries and he described the bookings on the planned flights as already “healthy” despite only going on sale in February.

Celebrations for the inaugural flight departing Leeds Bradford included a water cannon salute.

Leeds Bradford Airport also handed two complimentary tickets to Leeds University students, Harriet Trayling & Joanna Mawdsley, (pictured above) helping them to travel to Copenhagen on the flight as part of their charity ‘Jailbreak’ escape.

Tony Hallwood, Leeds Bradford Airport’s Aviation Development and Marketing Director, commented: “Leeds Bradford Airport is delighted to welcome new airline SAS, linking Copenhagen, Denmark’s capital, with Leeds, the UK’s third largest city and located only 40 minutes away from York, the major tourism centre in Yorkshire.

“Regional businesses and tourism partners will also be pleased that this new direct service will offer a range of onward connections across Scandinavia to Sweden, Norway, Finland and Eastern Europe.”

Hans Dyhrfort, SAS’ regional general manager Western Europe, commented: “With almost three million people living within easy reach of the airport, Leeds Bradford and the Yorkshire region is an important hub of development for SAS.

“With York having established itself as the ‘Viking’ capital of the UK and the Yorkshire area having already strong cultural connections with Scandinavia, this is the perfect time to also strengthen business and commercial links between Leeds and Scandinavia.”

The new flight will offer Scandinavian Airlines’ two class system that operates on all its flights within Europe.With a flight time of just one hour 40 minutes, prices start from just £66 one way or £119 return.
