Peel Holdings and Route 66 bring drive-in cinema to Liverpool Waters

Drive-in cinema operator Route 66, in partnership with Liverpool Waters developer Peel Holdings, have confirmed a new drive-in cinema will open in the city this spring.

Route 66 and Peel have agreed to turn part of the Central Dock site, Clarence Dock, into an outdoor cinema for approximately 200 people.

Located within Liverpool Waters, the cinema is expected to attract visitors from across the north west region who are looking for an entirely different, more engaging cinematic experience compared to the sterile and humdrum multiplex offer.

Ian Pollitt, development investment surveyor at Peel Holdings, owners of the Liverpool Waters site said: “Liverpool Waters is the perfect location for this kind of popular leisure activity. To see the Clarence Dock area animated with many visitors will be a great sight and will provide a flavour of the future we are planning for the whole of Liverpool Waters.

“We will be announcing more cultural events at Liverpool Waters in the coming months building on the return of Royal de Luxe’s Gallic Giants in July. We are keen to make use of the site’s huge potential while we’re seeking development partners to help deliver the long-term vision.

Route 66 will feature one of the largest screens of any cinema in the land. Measuring up at 20 metres long by 15 metres high, the scale and quality of the digital projection will thrill cinemagoers.

Screening all the latest blockbuster releases alongside a special programme of cinematic classics, Route 66 promises an unforgettable experience making a trip to the flicks with friends an occasion to remember.

Visitors tune in to the film’s audio either via their vehicle’s sound system or via their hand-held devices and will be able to enjoy food and drink served directly to their car window. Costs are £20 per vehicle regardless of numbers of occupants.

Lee Seddon, of Route 66, commented: “Having seen the huge success of Route 66 in Manchester, which was the first outdoor digital cinema in Europe when it opened in 2012, we knew that there was the demand for a more exciting way to watch the latest releases than in your typical multiplex.
