Food waste contract for Hartlepool's J & B Recycling

Hartlepool’s J & B Recycling has secured a contract to manage all waste from the Kerry Ingredients operation in Brenda Road.

As a food and ingredient manufacturer, Kerry produces a significant amount of waste include cardboard, packaging, plastics, glass and excess food products.

But that is now being managed efficiently by J & B Recycling with no waste being sent to costly landfill sites.

Vikki Jackson-Smith, managing director of J & B Recycling, said: “We are delighted to be working with Kerry Ingredients because they are such a well-known national brand.

“They’re a big name in Hartlepool and for us as a company, working with other local enterprises is important. The team at Kerry Ingredients told us they were keen to manage their more waste more efficiently so we came up with a proposal which we felt best matched their needs and reduce the amount of waste which ends up in landfill.”

J & B Recycling is now providing weekly waste collections from Kerry with the majority of the waste processed and recycled at J & B’s Material Recycling Facility (MRF) just a mile away.

Food waste is taken to an anaerobic digestion facility for recycling and energy production. J & B Recycling has also worked with staff at Kerry to keep them informed about the business and environmental benefits of managing waste and ways to increase recycling rates.

J & B Recycling, which was named Hartlepool Business of the Year for the second time in 2013, recycles approximately 100,000 tonnes of waste each year from household, commercial, industrial and construction sources with customers including car parts manufacturer Nifco UK, Hartlepool College, Middleton Grange Shopping Centre in Hartlepool and Camerons Brewery.

Steve Luke, engineering manager at Kerry Ingredients, said: “Previous to using J & B Recycling for all our waste management services, things were not as efficient as they could have been and we certainly weren’t recycling as much as we could.

“It was our aim to have zero waste sent to landfill and I am delighted that we have achieved that with J & B Recycling. The first thing they did was to come in and carry out a waste audit to identify how much more material we could be recycling.

“It’s also very encouraging to be working with a local company which is practically on our doorstep because that again reduces our own environmental impact and helps to boost the economy in Hartlepool.”
