This week’s North East appointments

Tees Valley law firm Archers Law has strengthened the firm by appointing two of its solicitors as Associates.

Wendy Edwards has been promoted within the firm’s wills, probates and trusts team and Patrick Quigley within the commercial property team.

Promotions at Muckle LLP

North East law firm Muckle LLP has promoted four lawyers within its Newcastle-based team.

Philip Clare has been promoted to partner in the corporate team. In addition, three lawyers have been promoted to associate solicitors, being Frances Barker and Amy Sergison in the employment team and Kelly Jordan in the banking and restructuring team.

Senior partner Hugh Welch said: “These promotions are well deserved and reflect the hard work, expertise and enthusiasm of each of the individuals. They clearly really enjoy what they do and it’s great to see them develop professionally at Muckle, whether joining us as trainees or later in their careers.”

Newcastle Building Society has appointed a new head for its financial advice division.

Stuart Dodson, who has lived in the North East his entire life, has joined Newcastle Building Society as Managing Director of Newcastle Financial Services Limited, a subsidiary company to the Society.

His main role will be to guide and develop its financial advice division working under the new regulatory regime.

Stuart has 15 years’ experience, including roles at Britannia Building Society, the Financial Services Authority and the Money Advice Service, as well as as Sales Manager and Head of Financial Consultancy at Legal and General.

Naylors property management department has expanded its team with two new appointments.

The firm’s management team now comprises nine people following the promotion of Katy Goulding to a property management role and the recruitment of a graduate, Nathan O’Prey, to assist in facilities management.

Angus White, director of asset management at Naylors commented: “This period of significant growth reflects the investment we have put into our management operations over a number of years.

“We have developed a proactive, hands-on approach paying close attention to the needs of every tenant, which we believe is essential in securing and maintaining income whilst keeping costs to a minimum.”

Mattioli Woods plc has expanded in the North East with the appointment of a new consultant, Michael Fryer.

Michael joins Mattioli Woods with 14 years’ experience gained in the financial services sector. He previously worked for Wesleyan Medical Sickness as a financial consultant, specialising in wealth management and retirement planning predominantly to hospital doctors, consultants and surgeons.

Prior to Wesleyan, Michael also worked as an independent financial adviser with Northumbria Financial Management, where he gave advice to a broad range of clients, including civil servants, entrepreneurs and small businesses.

Michael will be based in Durham and will focus on providing services to clients and accountants in the surrounding areas.

Director Murray Smith said: “We are delighted to welcome Michael to the Group. We have a strong client base in the North East and Michael’s appointment is a natural extension of our existing wealth management services.

“At a time of significant change in pension legislation, Michael will be providing local clients with meaningful, strategic guidance on all aspects of their pension scheme.”

Donald Barclay has been appointed sales engineer at Sunderland-based Haskel Europe.

His role covers the north of England and Scotland, working with oil and gas, subsea, recycling and general manufacturing sectors.

Donald is a graduate engineer who formerly worked for Rolls Royce Marine Division in Aberdeen and Autoclave Engineers in Pennsylvania. He brings with him many years experience of worldwide markets, and a close understanding of Haskel Europe’s high pressure products.

Donald Barclay said: “I’m delighted to be working with a company I’ve known and supported for many years. I’m confident of moving forward well with Haskel, which has a strong reputation for its products across the sectors I’ve worked in for many years.”

Two computing science students are soon to join the ranks of Newcastle University graduates at thriving North East software consultancy and development company, Scott Logic.

Joel Magee and Ashley Matthews are the latest in a long line of graduates to be offered employment by the firm, having been introduced to the company by the University via subsidised placement schemes designed to match student talent to work opportunities.

The business employs 120 staff across its Newcastle headquarters and offices in Edinburgh and Bristol and provides software consulting and development services to global businesses in financial services, energy, healthcare and the public sector. It began working with the University’s Careers Service five years ago through the Newcastle Work Experience programme and Graduate Apprentices scheme.

Since then Scott Logic has been so impressed with the six students it recruited for work experience placements that all have been offered permanent jobs – two of these through the Graduate Apprentices scheme.

Michal Brosh, resourcing manager at Scott Logic, said: “The relationship we have with Newcastle University is incredibly important to us. We are going through a period of rapid growth and as our business is knowledge-based, we depend on recruiting the very best talent.”

Newcastle-based PR and marketing agency Karol Marketing Group has appointed Northumbria University student Ben Lenighan, as PR Assistant.

Following a successful work placement with the multi-award winning agency, Ben was offered a part-time paid position to coincide with his studies.

Speaking of his appointment, Ben 20, originally from Harrogate said: “I’m so pleased that Karol Marketing has given me this fantastic opportunity.

“I have learned a lot through my experience so far and I am very excited to continue working with Karol’s highly experienced and specialist team.”
