Tax advisory startup reaches £400k turnover and over 100 clients

A Yorkshire-based specialist tax advisory business start up has achieved a turnover of £400k in its first 12 months.

The firm, which provides tax and risk management advice, has also doubled its workforce, and is looking to extend its reach to mainland Europe, helping ex-pats with a variety of tax issues.

From a standing start the pair now have 100 plus clients, based all over the UK, ranging from sole traders to multi-nationals, plus high–profile sports starts and one of the world’s best-known entertainers.

Independent Tax and Forensic Services LLP was formed by two former tax inspectors, Gary Brothers and Stephen Outhwaite.

Both Stephen and Gary began their careers as “tax men”, working for HM Revenue & Customs at senior levels. After more than two decades as tax inspectors, both resigned to work for accountancy practices offering firms and individuals tax advice.

After ten years, the pair decided the time was ripe to set up on their own and launched Independent Tax and Forensic Services LLP.

The firm, which has its office in Harrogate and Hessle, Hull, is also the only Yorkshire-based firm that has been shortlisted as one of only three finalists in the Taxation Awards’ “Tax Investigations Team of Year” category.

Gary Brothers said: “Being shortlisted for this award is a massive achievement for Independent Tax and Forensic Services LLP, particularly considering we have only been in business for such a short period of time.”

Stephen Outhwaite said: “It has been an incredibly exciting year for us, and being nominated in the national Taxation Awards is a wonderful way to mark our first 12 months in business.”

Just before Christmas, Sky News called upon Stephen and Gary to comment about HMRC practices and for an insight into the organisation’s inner workings.
