Quilter Cheviot backs future investors of Manchester
Quilter Cheviot has been lending a helping hand to the next generation of budding lawyers as part of a competition organised by The University of Law Manchester.
Investment Manager from the firm’s Manchester office, Paul Neary, and Investment Adviser, Helen Russell, met students from the university as part of the Share Race Challenge.
Held over six months, the initiative saw four teams of students invest £100,000 of virtual cash into FTSE 100 companies on a dummy trading platform.
The pair, who are based at the company’s King Street office, consulted students throughout the course of the scheme to guide them with expert insight into financial markets, share values and investment decisions.
Team Beta, made up of Chris Clarke, Larissa Ling, Sarah Parry, Alex Staniland and Sadie Whittam were awarded the prize for Best Investment Discipline for their professional presentation and reporting procedures.
The team’s Chris Clarke was individually recognised and awarded the Outstanding Achievement accolade for his personal development throughout the challenge.
An award for Investment Performance was presented to Team Alpha, which they achieved by carefully choosing a combination of shares they felt would give them the greatest short-term gain.
Senior Lecturer at The University of Law Manchester, Kate Baldwin, said: “The Share Race gives our students the chance to gain a real insight into business and financial markets. It provides valuable experience of team work and presentation skills together with the opportunity to interact with other professionals working in this area.
“The students worked extremely hard and performed very well and I am sure they will have developed skills and knowledge which will assist them with their future careers.”
Paul Neary said: “We were really impressed with the ideas and enthusiasm of the students. It was inspiring to see their desire to learn about the world of investment and to turn their new knowledge into a working strategy.”
Helen Russell added: “It’s hands-on initiatives such as this that paint the clearest picture of what a career in investment is truly like. It has been a pleasure working with the students taking part in the Share Race Challenge and we wish them the best of luck in the future.”
The Share Race Challenge was launched in 2011 by The University of Law Manchester. As well as receiving support from Quilter Cheviot, the initiative also received backing from national law firm DWF and Cheshire based Xentum Wealth Management.
Quilter Cheviot focuses primarily on structuring and managing bespoke discretionary portfolios for private clients, charities, trusts, pension funds and intermediaries.
The company is one of the UK’s largest independently owned discretionary investment firms, tracing its heritage back to 1771 and is now based in 13 locations across the UK, Jersey and Ireland, with more than £15.5bn of funds under management.
