Power company in major cabling investment for Liverpool
SP Energy Networks is to launch a £15 million investment programme to replace high voltage underground cables that run through parts of south Liverpool.
Working in coordination with Liverpool City Council, SP Energy Networks will use the opportunity to replace two major cables (with a combined length of over 18km), in a single project that also shortens the overall route to around 16km.
As a key component of Liverpool’s electrical infrastructure, the cables have helped to provide the city with an industry leading level of reliability for over 50 years. To ensure continued reliability, SP Energy Networks has taken the decision to replace the cables and aim to complete the full project by the Spring of 2015.
The project is being undertaken by SP Energy Networks’ principal contractor Iberdrola Engineering and Construction (IEC), who have been working closely with Liverpool City Council to minimise the disruption during the cable excavation and reinstatement works.
The company is also actively working with the council to identify opportunities to coordinate this project with their Strategic Highway Network Investment programme.
Mark Sobczak, Programme Manager for SP Energy Networks, said: “We are committed to investing in our electricity network, and this multi-million pound project will help to ensure that the electrical infrastructure in Liverpool is maintained and continues to provide a secure supply.
“Further, this project demonstrates SP Energy Networks commitment to the City of Liverpool, local communities, and our customers.”
The company is developing a schedule that aims to ensure that supplies to customers – businesses and residents - are not interrupted during the replacement work..
