Interview: Lydia Vladimirskaya, founder of BRIC magazine
Tell me about BRIC Magazine and who it is aimed at?
BRIC Magazine is aimed at readers who want great insights into all the fun, motivating and high-end markets found in and out of BRIC countries. Our readers are empowered individuals, but also humble enough to appreciate the achievements no matter how big or small from entrepreneurs and forward thinkers. Although established, they may also secretly turn straight to the society pages to take a sneaky peak in hope of finding themselves or their friends!
How did you get started in publishing?
Once I was attending a dinner in London at a dear friend, a Professor from the States. We got caught in a debate about which city is the centre of the world and if such a city exists. Our conversation turned to which nations were developing the fastest and making the most profound contributions to the economy, art and culture in today’s society. The BRIC countries came up and the more we discussed the more we realised these countries as a union had more strength than anywhere else in terms of inspiration, success stories and achievements this decade. We realised there were no publications currently documenting them in a manner than saw past their economic achievements. It was not about money but about supporting our neighbouring nations and recognising future trends and anticipating global movements as well as discovering art and beauty.
What kind of features/interviews does BRIC Magazine feature?
We are very selective about which individuals we are interviewing and for us ambitious and inspiring people are the key to our features. Whether they are a CEO for an IT company or running a Banana plantage, it doesn’t really matter. We are focusing on the person itself and their life-story. Individuals with different background that have something that influence others, we also write features on things that are “now” for example we are writing about the world cup in Brazil in issue 2, footballers, the head of FIFA Mr Koloskov etc.
The publishing industry is notoriously hard, what makes BRIC magazine stand out from any other luxury publications?
We cater to a wide range of topics combining subjects such as philosophy, art, business, success stories and smart advice. It is not a publication just for the businessman or just for the artist, it is something bold and fresh that caters to a new hybrid reader, the intellectual all-rounder with a thirst for what’s new on a global level. BRIC Magazine is motivated by the idea of endorsing international inspiring ideas, achievements and creativity.
It’s hard to compare BRIC to other magazines on the market as we feel there really isn’t anything else like it currently. I felt that there was a gap in the market since there was no single voice of authority for the BRIC nations. These countries are filled with art, culture and resources that are not being utilised and promoted to the Western world. As well as telling the stories of successful entrepreneurs and artists, I wanted to create a platform to promote inspirational content from one side of the world to the other and to help build an international community of like-minded people who can provide advice and business tips to others.
What is your favourite BRIC country?
Ooh! That’s a tough one, I was born in Moscow so obviously my heritage is very important to me, but each BRIC nation has their own special qualities. Brazil’s beaches are the best in the world and some of the finest cuisine in my opinion and India is so rich in art, vibrancy with much unearthed talent. China is known as an unstoppable force in the export industry, but they also are a country rich in culture and history. BRIC countries have so much to offer, how could I have a favourite?!
What does the future hold for BRIC?
The future for the BRIC countries is extremely exciting, with advances in the global economy and evolutions in art, culture and science. We feel that there is so much undiscovered potential and we want to be the ones to unearth them.
