North Shields pub site to be redeveloped for housing

The site of a former pub in North Shields is set to be transformed into new homes, to help meet North Tyneside’s housing demands.

North Tyneside Council and developer Galliford Try Partnerships North plan to deliver 32 new homes for rent on the site of the former Brig Public House and surrounding land situated at Blandford Road, Chirton Grange.

The scheme is part of North Tyneside Council’s drive to create at least 3,000 extra, affordable homes across the borough over the next ten years, to address future housing needs.

The proposed development has been designed in consultation with the community to match local housing requirements. It includes a mixture of bungalows, houses and an apartment block as well as open spaces and landscaping.

Subject to planning approval, work is expected to start in summer 2014 and homes should be ready to occupy by summer 2015.

Councillor John Harrison, Cabinet Member with responsibility for Housing, said: “Demand for housing continues to increase, and many residents struggle to find suitable places to live that are within budget. That is why we are working with our partners to deliver affordable homes like these, that residents on average or lower incomes can afford to rent or buy.

“This partnership with Galliford Try is another example of how we can work closely with private developers to meet housing needs in an intelligent way. We have worked closely with the local community to plan this scheme, to make sure we’re putting the right homes in the right places.”

Stephen McCoy, Managing Director with Galliford Try Partnerships North, added: “We are delighted to be working with North Tyneside Council on an initiative to improve the quality and choice of affordable homes. Developments such as this one account for an increasing percentage of our work programme, which is something we welcome.”

Galliford Try will develop the land and North Tyneside Council will have the option to purchase the newly built homes and make them available for rent.

The proposed development is set to offer six two- bedroom bungalows; two three-bedroom accessible bungalows; eight two-bedroom houses and two three-bedroom houses. An apartment block of fourteen units will be a mix of one and two-bedroom homes. Almost half of the new homes will have level access shower rooms. The site will also provide 50 designated parking spaces.
