Transport Minister visits Yorkshire to encourage infrastructure growth around LBIA
Transport Minister Robert Goodwill MP was welcomed by John Parkin, Chief Executive of Leeds Bradford to discuss infrastructure and access to the airport.
The Department for Transport have recently commissioned a study to examine options for improving connectivity to Leeds Bradford in its catchment area, which is now underway.
The meeting addressed transport connections to the airport and provided an opportunity to for the airport to brief the Minister on progress to date to improve surface access.
A ‘masterplan’ for the future development of the airport is in progress, to enable it to fully deliver its economic benefit potential to the Leeds City Region.
During the visit, the Minister took a tour of the airport guided by the Chief Executive and was shown the latest developments to the airport’s passenger terminal which is part of a package of investment to deliver high quality facilities for its now 3.3 million customers per annum.
John Parkin, chief executive at Leeds Bradford International Airport, said: “Leeds Bradford Airport is one of the fastest growing UK regional airports with considerable potential to grow further.
“In order to accelerate the airport’s growth and to deliver the economic benefits which flow from that to the Leeds City Region, surface access improvements by road and rail are important elements of future success. We strongly support the Government’s connectivity study.”
Aviation minister Robert Goodwill said: “The UK’s regional air connections are a key part of our future growth and long term economic plan.
“I am pleased to have had the opportunity to meet the team at Leeds Bradford Airport and hear about the major growth of the airport in recent years.
“Leeds Bradford is a great economic asset for the region and for the nation, with more and more people using it to start journeys to Europe and around the world.”
