Environmental consultants use virtual reality tool

Virtual reality headset gear is being used by one firm of environmental consultants that operate a Newcastle base.

SLR Consulting is currently preparing its real time models to use the virtual reality technology, the ’ Oculus Rift’, which will enable projects to be viewed in a totally immersive 3D environment.

In future this will provide developers, architects, designers and planners with an incredibly accurate sense of scale for their proposed schemes.

The device gives developers, architects, designers and planners with an incredibly accurate sense of scale for their proposed schemes.

Wearers can navigate the virtual environment by turning their head, or by using a game controller or keyboard.

SLR’s Rob Myers, associate architectural visualiser, said: “This latest technology strengthens the services we can offer to our clients and we see it as an effective tool for projects that need to explain how a scheme will or did appear.

“We believe that it could also be very effective in public consultations, especially for large scale infrastructure projects, such as grid connections or railways.”
