UK unemployment falls to five-year low

The UK rate of unemployment fell to 6.8% of the population in the three months to March, meaning 2.2 million people were out of work.

The number of economically inactive people aged between 16 and 64 also dropped during the period.

283,000 more people were in work during the period than the three months to December, according to the latest ONS data.

Analysis showed the rise in people in work was attributable to an increase in the number of self-employed - which reached 4.5 million.
