York reaches target early in Apprenticeship challenge

The York Apprenticeship Challenge has reached its target, securing 100 pledges to create new Apprenticeship vacancies from local businesses in just 71 days.

The campaign, which started during National ApprenticeshipWeek and is led by City of York Council in partnership with local providers, sought to create 100 pledges from local businesses to create Apprenticeship vacancies in 100 days.

Businesses who have pledged to recruit an apprenticeinclude; Minster Electrical, International Service, Papa Kata, Curtain Up Ltd and Business Support York and North Yorkshire.

Councillor Janet Looker, the council’s Cabinet Member for Education, Children and Young People: “This is great news and I would like to thank all the businesses who have supported this campaign so far.

“One of the key priorities of the council is securing jobs and growth and it is pleasing to see so many local businesses support such a campaign. It is hoped that such vacancies across the city in a variety of sectors will help to keep young talent in York and offer them opportunities across the city.

“Whilst the target of 100 new vacancies has been reached the campaign is still ongoing and it would be great to see more vacancies created by local businesses.”

The one hundredth pledge came from Business SupportYork and North Yorkshire who are looking to recruit a Business Administration Apprentice.

Heidi Green, business support specialist from Business Support York and North Yorkshire said: “We decided to employ an apprentice as we feel we have a lot to give by offering training and development to the right person.

“We are proud to be part of this scheme and to support apprentices.”

Providers involved in the campaign are Askham Bryan College, Babcock Training, ETS (Electronic Technology Services), JTL Training, YH Training Services, York College, York Learning and City ofYork Council (York Apprenticeship Hub).
