Barclays open multi-million pound Newcastle base

Barclays has officially opened its new multi-million pound North East base on Newcastle quayside, in one of the biggest property deals to have taken place in the city in recent years.

The bank has consolidated all its North East regional divisions and training facilities into the St Anns Street premises, in what is the biggest capital investment Barclays has made this year.

The move will see Barclays’ Corporate team relocate from its former Grey Street premises to join its Wealth and Investment Management functions from Westgate Road.

The prominent glass-fronted building brings Barclays close to other professional services firms such as Ward Hadaway, KPMG and Bond Dickinson.

All Barclays’ regional training requirements will be conducted through the Newcastle centre, which is likely to receive a visit from chief executive Anthony Jenkins.

Brian Thorpe, head of Barclays Corporate Banking in the North East said: “Newcastle is a fantastic place to do business and the move to the new offices is major investment for the city and the North East.

“It will offer an excellent environment for both our clients and our employees and enables us to bring our banking operations under one roof as well as demonstrating our ongoing commitment to the local economy and wealth creation in the region.”

Barclays premises in the state-of-the-art office complex will feature a dedicated customer reception, meeting suite and views over the River Tyne.

Andrew Miller, regional director for Barclays Wealth and Investment Management in Newcastle, said: “We are delighted to open a new office at this prestigious new development in Newcastle to support our large number of clients in the region.

“As a combined team, we will be well-placed to advise across a wide range of circumstances: from entrepreneurs looking to take the next step with their business or families seeking support on inheritance and succession planning.”
