Technology investment at Ashington bakers creates two jobs

A family-run baking firm has expanded its Ashington operation, creating two new jobs.

J Donkin Bakers, which has four branches in Ashington, has been supported by Arch, the Northumberland Development Company, to buy and install a 10 metre long flowrapper machine.

The technology enables the 92-year-old company to expand its wholesale business as it can now package thousands of buns a day and cater for large-scale contracts.

Managing director Chris Donkin. grandson of the bakers’ founder, Jack Donkin, said: “This new machine is one of the biggest developments in our company’s history as it will completely change the scale of our operation. We can now compete for really substantial orders which will enable us to grow in a significant way.

“Without Arch, we could have never invested in this technology, their help has been first rate. I am also delighted to have created two new jobs for local people. It is an extra bonus that we have been able to support another business, GSP (UK) based in our home town, by buying the new machine from them. We are extremely proud to be a long-standing Ashington company. “

Peter McIntyre, Arch Group managing director, added: “We were established to help businesses like Donkins take advantage of growth opportunities. There are not many companies who have their proud history.

“It is great to see them build on the traditions passed down over decades yet still have a keen eye on the future. They look set for even greater success in the years to come.”

J Donkin Bakers currently employs 32 people and has created two new posts, a baker and operator for the new packaging machine, with its plans. Many of the staff have worked for the business for over 20 years with Chris Donkin’s record stretching back 38 years to 1976.

J Donkin Bakers has branches in Milburn Road, Station Road, Woodhorn Road and North Seaton Road in Ashington, selling a wide range of breads, confectionery and savoury products.

Support for Donkins has been awarded by Arch’s Northumberland Business Growth Programme which aims to give companies support to fulfill their potential to expand.
