J & B scoop ten-year multi-million pound contract

Hartlepool-based J & B Recycling has secured a multi-million pound contract to manage waste from homes across Hull and East Yorkshire.

The firm successfully tendered to deliver waste management services on behalf of Hull City Council and The East Riding of Yorkshire Council, which covers towns such as Beverley, Goole and Bridlington.

The 10-year contract has been won in partnership with Hull-based waste management firm Biowise and will become a part of J & B Recycling’s long term strategy. It is anticipated that these long term plans will see an increase in the 150 staff currently employed.

Vikki Jackson-Smith, managing director of J & B Recycling, said: “This is a fantastic contract to win which has the potential to lead to significant growth for J & B Recycling as we establish our expertise to deliver waste management contracts on behalf of local authorities.

“The contract does not start until April 2015 so it is too early at this stage to say how many new jobs it will create but it certainly secures the future of our business for many years to come.”

J & B Recycling worked in partnership with Biowise to win the domestic waste management contracts which have an estimated value of £4 million per year.

The first contract will involve the processing of recyclable household materials from approximately 112,000 homes across the City of Kingston upon Hull. The waste – such as glass and plastic bottles, newspaper and cardboard – will be collected by Hull City Council wagons and will then be sorted and managed at J & B Recycling.

The council estimates that J & B Recycling will be processing 25,000 tonnes of Hull’s waste per year.

The second contract involves the processing of garden and kitchen waste from approximately 263,000 homes across both the East Riding of Yorkshire and Hull.

Biowise expects to process approximately 60,000 tonnes per year of organic waste which will be converted into quality compost for use in horticulture and agriculture.

Ms Jackson-Smith added: “This has been a thorough and comprehensive procurement process and has taken more than a year to get to this point.

“We bid in partnership with Biowise because both companies provide innovative waste management services and J&B already work with local authorities both in the North East of England and the Scottish Borders.

“It was clear from day one that there were a lot of synergies between the two businesses and that helped us to deliver a competitive submission based around quality, expertise and price.”

James Landau, managing director of Biowise, added: “We are delighted to be working with J&B Recycling to deliver these waste contracts.

“This way we can continue to support the local economy, keeping jobs secure and creating more opportunities alongside providing a quality waste management service.”

J & B Recycling, a two time winner of Hartlepool’s Business of the Year, won the Investment in Training award at the 2014 Hartlepool Business Awards and the Low Carbon and Environment category of the North East Business Awards in both 2013 and 2014.
