North East's only LGBT radio station to be broadcast on FM
The North East’s only dedicated LGBT radio station will now be broadcasting live from one of the region’s biggest free events after being granted a temporary FM licence.
Newcastle-based Pride Radio, which currently airs online, has been given permission to broadcast live on 107.9FM for a limited period, from June 30 – just in time to cover Newcastle Pride.
Lee Finan, Director at Pride Radio, said: “Since being established in 2010, Pride Radio has been operating under a restricted service licence (RSL), which limits it to online broadcasting and a maximum 28 days a year on FM.
“This year we’ve carefully timed our FM broadcast to coincide with the return of Newcastle Pride, which is now officially the second largest LGBT festival in the UK, and we can’t wait to get started.”
Pride Radio, which is run by a team of on and off-air volunteers, will be broadcasting live throughout the three-day festival, which returns to Newcastle’s Town Moor and Times Square from Friday July 18.
As well as airing tracks from the festival’s star performers, including Sinitta, Shayne Ward and the Vengaboys, the Pride Radio team will also be taking to the festival’s Pride in the City stage for their own set on Sunday July 20.
People in the Newcastle area will be able to tune in to all the action on 107.9FM, while listeners in other regions can hear live coverage online at www.prideradio.co.uk or via the free Pride Radio app, which is available to download for Android and iPhone..
Mark Nichols, Chair of Northern Pride, which organises the annual event, said: “The live coverage on Pride Radio will ensure anyone who can’t make it to Newcastle Pride will still have the chance to be part of the action and we’re absolutely thrilled to have the team on board,”
The majority of Newcastle Pride is free to attend, however a number of Gold, VIP and Platinum packages are also available incorporating hospitality and a reserved viewing area for the Town Moor performances.
