JMW launches specialist cycling claims division
Fast-growing Manchester law firm JMW Solicitors has launched a specialist personal injury service for cyclists involved in collisions.
The new service, Twisted Spokes, is staffed by lawyers who are cycling specialists and will represent individuals seeking compensation and redress following accidents were they weren’t at fault.
The launch comes as new figures obtained by JMW reveal that the number of serious injuries to cyclists on Greater Manchester’s roads has risen by 23 per cent in the past 10 years. The law firm says that the rise in accidents reflects the increasing popularity of cycling and underlines the need for investment to improve cycling safety infrastructure.
Jane Bedford McLaren, senior associate and head of JMW’s cycling claims team, said: “Having achieved over £200,000 in compensation for cyclists in recent times, we recognised that there is clearly a need for a specialist service.
“The UK is fast becoming a nation of cyclists, with the latest figures from Sport England showing that 99,000 more people are cycling now than in 2008. As a result, our roads are getting busier, and when accidents do happen, there is a good chance that vulnerable cyclists could be seriously injured.
“We believe there’s an urgent need for improved cycling infrastructure, such as more dedicated cycle paths, alongside better driver education and enforcement of the rules to enable every cyclist to feel confident on the roads.
“It’s important for cyclists to be aware that, if they are involved in an accident caused by another road user, they might be able to take action against the person at fault – not only as compensation for any injuries but also for any damage to their bike.”
According to figures released by Greater Manchester Police, following a request by JMW under the Freedom of Information Act, there were 90 serious injuries in 2013, compared with 74 in 2004.
The Twisted Spokes team will also provide cyclists with safety tips and information and commentary on the world of cycling.
The launch comes after JMW announced record results for the year ending April 30, which saw fee income across the firm rise 14.6% to £17.2m.
