New team announced to run Tyneside Cinema Bar Café

Tyneside Cinema has recruited a new team of staff to run the popular city centre venue’s Bar Café. The ambitious new project opens on Newcastle’s Pilgrim Street later this year.

The head of the new venture, Managing Director Catherine Kersey, formerly of Nottingham’s independent Broadway Cinema, will be supported by Head Chef Tom Adlam, who was employed as Senior Sous Chef at Café 21 on Newcastle’s Quayside, and Bar Manager Chris Kippax, who was previously House Manager at Tyneside Cinema.

The trio will lead a team of newly appointed catering and bar staff, including three apprentice chefs from Newcastle College’s award-winning Hospitality Apprenticeship programme, and two Front of House staff from the College’s sector based work academy.

Managing Director Catherine Kersey said, “In these tough economic times, we’re delighted that the Tyneside Bar Café has created 20 new jobs for the city. Our new Head Chef Tom and Bar Manager Chris bring a wealth of experience to their new roles, and we’re thrilled to be taking on so many talented and enthusiastic new staff, whose ages span across five decades.

“We’re especially pleased to be working with Newcastle College to help people in the North East secure new jobs, and in some cases, support them in taking the first important steps in their careers with the Tyneside Bar Café.

“The whole team is working hard behind the scenes over the summer to get everything ready – from what’s on the menu to the sign above our new front door on Pilgrim Street - and we can’t wait to welcome our first customers when we open for business this autumn.”

The new Tyneside Bar Café will be open from 8.00am till late every day, and will also present film screenings and events in a cabaret-style space inside.

The project is part of a £1.3million redevelopment of the iconic Grade II listed building, which also includes the opening of The Gallery, a new digital exhibition space for artists’ moving image and independent film on the Cinema’s third floor.
